Increase Your Business Security With Fire Alarms

By Mark Mahaffey

If you are a business owner, you should make fire protection one of your highest priorities. Even though it may be easy to rebuild your business after the devastation by fire, it is not so easy to recover from the mental and emotional trauma. Losing your business to fire is not something to take likely.

In order to keep yourself as safe as possible from fire, you should try to find out about the fire as soon as you can after it breaks out. The first five minutes of a fire are the most important as far as being able to contain it before it does too much damage and blazes out of control. Therefore, you should identify the best way to be alerted to a fire as early as possible.

Heat detectors are one way to do this. These detectors have special components inside them that are sensitive to increases in temperature. When the temperature increases, it will activate the sensors and you will be warned by an alarm.

Also important is having detectors for smoke. Smoke detectors come in three main types. Ionization is best if you are interested in detecting fires that are large and fast burning. But if you want to detect slow burning fires, you should choose photoelectric.

But if you would to detect both kinds of fires (which is the best choice by far), you should choose to use combination smoke detectors. These will let you know about both kinds of fire, because it combines the features of both ionization and photoelectric. No matter what kind you get though, you should maintain it carefully.

Maintaining your smoke detectors is not difficult, but it does require you to be diligent. A non-working smoke detector cannot protect you. So every six months, you should change the batteries, clean out dust, check the wiring and do an actual test on the system. This will help you to stay protected and safe if a fire breaks out.
