Learning About Diaspora Support Services For Kenyans

By Essie Osborn

Kenya has been known to have hardworking citizens whose efforts have been noticed by international community. This has brought about increased diaspora support services for Kenyans to enable them cover shortages. Even though still struggling with poverty and diseases, a lot has been done and change has been observed.

For the sake of brevity and a clearer understanding the activities can be classified under the following broad headings; Professional, Community/Business Development activities and Support groups and activities pertaining to religion. This generalization makes it easier to understand the nature of these services as well as makes it easier to locate them.

Most of these areas have different environmental conditions that call for different reactions. This kind of diversity makes it possible to come up with solutions to various kinds of challenges in such areas. Most people in the diaspora are either engaged in business or professional careers. Others also get into families thus increasing their population abroad.

For those engaged in business, family and professions, there are a number of formed organizations that serve to protect the rights of these groups of people. Some of the assistance offered by these organizations include protection and licensing of lawyers, doctors, and realtors among several other professionals. These organizations also make it their business educating the workers of their rights and any other legislative responsibilities they are supposed to be aware of.

Such a long-term transition is also stressful for the families as the home environment is all they are used to and many times if not always the new country has a completely different way of life. The stark contrast is perhaps most apparent to and in the elderly, as the older you grow the more set in your ways you become.

Another important service that merits discussion is the Banking activities, as seen in many cases, only an individual goes to work abroad leaving behind their families. This apart from the obvious pain that it causes the human psyche also raises the practical problem of sending money back home. And as is the case with all matters of money, so is this service rife with fraudulence and dishonesty making a choice difficult.

These immigrants live in different areas with different needs, and so, people experiencing the same issues should be able to get assistance for their specific locality. There are a lot of resources in the internet that can be checked and right ones contacted. Various organizations have websites and they can be reached for assistance with funds or advice.

The human being is a social animal and the need to be part of a group and be accepted is a universal need and demand. Such is reflected in the desire of diaspora to congregate and share and services such as these are of immense value to the individual and society at large.
