Letting Down A Promotion At Work: How To Do It Right Devoid Of Compromising Your Job

By Bill Duggen

An offer for a promotion would simply mean better position in the company, a better environment or office as well as better pay! Though there may be dozens of advantages one can reap from accepting a promotion, experts say that there are also valid reasons why you need to pass on such an opportunity.

Of course, it would not be as easy as it sounds. Accepting the offer would mean you will have to leave your present team and start a new relationship with new teammates. The new environment or work office can also contribute to the total failure of the job if not dealt with accordingly and tactfully. Thus it is really important that you consider all of the ramifications before taking that golden ticket.

Let's say you're no longer willing to accept the offer, how would you decline it in a way that no compromises or negative impacts to your position. This process is actually quite easy if you?ve been working with the company for some time and have developed a good relationship with its management. Since you have already established a good relationship among your colleagues and among the management, any decision would seem acceptable. Thus, you can simply say "no" to the job promotion without having to think of dire consequences. Many promotions involve a relocation which not many people are willing to take, thus a tactful way to reject the offer would be to simply let your bosses know of your current situation and that the relocation would mean an issue in your part. A good idea for this tactic is to mention that you are having your kids in school and that having to relocate to another place would devastate them. Or ?I've been wanting to progress through the company however I can't accept that great amount of responsibility now as I am currently tending to my sick mother.? and many others.

You can also decline a generous offer for a promotion by clearly stating that you are more productive and useful if you are on your current position. You can say "That's an excellent offer but I can't leave this position now. Specially when I now understand how to maximize production and performance with this job.?

You can also have a different approach in rejecting an offer by learning about the offered position and finding a way that the skill requirements does not suit you. Simply have them picture what you are doing and what your key skills are whenever you are on that current position. Make a comparison on your present job and the offered job and simply point out where you can perform better.

Rejecting a job promotion is unnatural and also means that you are not following orders from the company that is why it is a difficult thing to do. However, if you would consider these tips mentioned in this post then you will have no difficulty doing so.
