Marketing On Twitter - Is It A Profitable Way Of List Building?

By Sumner Lang

Years ago, there was a big promotion for Twitter marketing tools. It was believed that Twitter was one of the best ways to grow a list and to get people to buy the products you are promoting. Still, how much of a bang for your buck do you get from any of these software tools that were pushed at us to improve our gross sales? Just how great is Twitter marketing? This article will examine the case for becoming involved and to see if it will actually repay your time and effort.

I was one of those who wanted to see if getting a big following on Twitter was going to help my product promotion campaigns and so paid for the tools. I signed up for programs that promised to get me followers on Twitter and bought software tools to help promote my products. All in all, I think I invested in about 8 software programs to help with my Twitter marketing venture.

One of these programs was an automatic 'people follower' on Twitter with the aim that some of those people would follow me back. Then there was the software that would un-follow individuals who were not following me. Removing non-followers meant I could devote my attention on other people who might be swayed to follow me. Amongst other Twitter marketing tools I got hold of, there was one which automatically tweeted a Multi Level Marketing blog post just as soon as it was posted to my blog.

And when I began using all of these software the results seemed to be astounding since they all did precisely what they said they would do. But as soon as it appeared that I wasn't making any money, my initial excitement was soon dampened. Each day I would post about ten blog entries knowing that they would then automatically be displayed on Twitter also. Hoping to increase the number of daily posts, I found a way to automatically post any number of entries to my blog and hopefully obtain more followers on Twitter.

So permit me to tell you all about my results. After three years utilizing these methods, I had built almost 10,000 Twitter followers. I bet you think this is an impressive number, but that's not the complete story: Also in the past three years I have had over fifteen thousand of my blog posts that were advertising affiliate products added to my Twitter account.

And that was the only campaigning that I did for that blog, I chose not to even ping the posts to see precisely what Twitter could do for me. Just how 'good' it was quickly became plain: after 3 years only two affiliate sales made me $46.74 plus another $9.10 for Adsense. With just 2 - 4 visits per day coming from Twitter, perhaps this is not surprising.

In a nutshell, having roughly ten thousand followers on Twitter using all these Twitter marketing tools will not give you the results you are looking for. At the end of the day I'm now out of cash for the Twitter marketing tools I invested in because my dollar return was so dismal. There could be other better methods to market on Twitter, but from my experience, using automatic software tools is not one of them.
