Merits And Demerits Of An Above Ground Storage Tank

By Krystal Branch

An above ground storage tank are one of the two types of storage tanks. These tanks are situated either on the ground or on a slightly raised ground. Their capacity is regulated to 10,000 litres for those whose contents are any other liquids other than water. One thing to note is that they both have advantages and disadvantages over the other designs.

They can be easily monitored for leaks and corrosion thus making it better than the underground tanks. They are mostly used to store liquids such as oil and water and thus susceptible to pressure which may cause breakages. The fact that they are above the ground makes it easy to notice whenever there are such problems in the tanks which calls for repairs. This will reduce the losses that may occur from losses from leaks.

Minimal excavation is required when establishing these designs thus making it relatively cheaper. The only excavation required is for foundation only for the support. They are mostly raised slightly above while there are some which are raised high above the ground. In both situations the excavation required is very minimal slightly less expensive installation. In case where excavation is mandatory for underground tanks is in case of problems calling for repairs.

The third advantage is that they can be easily monitored. They are visible and thus the owner can easily monitor any changes which may either call for repairs. This makes this type of tanks easy to maintain and also easy to use. This also ensures there is continuous maintenance process which increases the economic life of the tanks.

They not only have pros but they do have cons as well. The major disadvantage of using these designs is that they are very susceptible to adverse weather conditions. These conditions the exposure of the tanks to risks associated with them such as breakages and corrosion. They are mostly raised above ground but in an open space free from shades thus increasing their exposure to too much heat from the sun during the day and very low temperatures during the nights. The difference in these conditions will result to expansion and contraction that may cause bursting. Other adverse conditions like thunderstorms have a negative effect.

Apart from the effect of weather conditions, these tanks are also susceptibility to accidents. They are constructed above grounds and that means they can be accessed easily by various individuals who may cause various forms of accidents on the tanks. An example is whereby individuals working around the tanks leave oil tanks running and accidents of fire result in one way or another. These not only results to accidents to the tanks but also extends to those situated close.

It is also disadvantageous to use these designs because one will have to incur an extra cost to acquire additional space to establish them. The tanks are built above grounds and that means one is expected to use an extra space. If there are many tanks especially for companies dealing with liquid products, it will be way too much. One can save space by constructing underground tanks.

It is therefore clear that above ground storage tank are more effective than the other type of tanks as it has many advantages. Despite this fact, it is necessary for one to analyze all the reasons for and against these types of tanks depending on the preference and priorities.
