Tips Of Carrying Out Heavy Equipment Service

By Eliza Mendoza

Heavy equipment is a large machinery or vehicle used mostly in construction or agricultural work for transportation purposes. Operating such machinery can be very costly. Due to poor maintenance this machinery will require to be repaired every now and then which slowly reduces its life span and it is also not good for business when the machinery keeps breaking down. Daily maintenance of this machinery takes at least 15 minutes and you can easily identify a problem before it calls for a whole day repair work. Machinery which is poorly maintained may also be a safety hazard for your employees. Mentioned below are the various periodic heavy equipment service procedures which are very helpful.

The first thing to do is have a schedule that entails the purpose of the procedure. There are some simple tasks that can be undertaken daily while complicated ones will require being handled in a longer schedule. After creating a schedule, you should then come up with a checklist to manage the daily maintenance activities.

On your everyday check up, you should go through the parts of the equipment to be repaired. You should be careful to check whether there is any worn out part or even oil leakages. In order to avoid tire bursts, you should ensure that the tires are well inflated with the required pressure. All the trash in the machinery should also be well cleaned. Do not forget to check on the chains and belts so as to ensure that they are all in order.

The parts of the machinery which are linked together should be greased daily for lubrication purpose. All the safety signs and equipment should be checked and put in place where they can be reached easily. It is important to check the fluid level on coolant, hydraulic and oils every day. If the level is down, topping up should be done before any work commences. This is because operating machinery with low levels of fluids can shorten its lifespan. The air filter should also be checked and cleaned if necessary.

After the machine has operated for 3 months or about 500 hours, it should be quarterly maintained. Quarterly maintenance ensures that the machine is thoroughly checked. It involves replacement of the engine oil and the hydraulic filter. One important part of quarterly maintenance is the replacement of diesel filter.

The last service should be done at the end of the period. This service is usually done at the end of the year. At this duration, the hydraulic oil and transmission fluids should be completely changed. One should ensure that antifreeze in the radiator is in good condition in order to work effectively on the winter season.

The fuel which was used during summer time should be drained from the tank and blended or arctic fuel refilled. This helps to avoid the fuel line from gelling when started in the cold season. The entire machinery or vehicle should be washed well while paying attention to clean the undercarriage and engine too. The air filters and cab should also be cleaned.

You should check the air conditioning unit and clean it. Ensure that all the lights are in good state and that all faulty ones are replaced. Look out for wear and tear especially in the tires. Replacement of worn out tires is essential in improving the machinerys performance. Carrying out heavy equipment service procedures will help in not only saving cash but also time.
